We find many ways to celebrate mothers, caregivers, or individuals who form maternal bonds. Might an Herbal tea fit into your schedule?  Mother’s Day was officially celebrated in 1907 by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virgina.  Its intent was to honor those mothers who were involved in the Civil war and gave their time, energy and sometimes sons to the cause.  In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill establishing the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers. Hence Mother’s Day became a part of American culture.

At WT Bland Library Miss Amber Perretti gave an educational and entertaining talk on “Homegrown Herbal Teas”. There was so much to learn from this expert that we asked permission to share the presentation with the Culinary Historians of Northern Illinois.  Yes, the talk was in Florida, but most of the herbs’ crossover to other parts of the country. (Check with your County Extension Office for more information.) A list of those herbal teas that can be grown successfully in Northern Illinois  can be found at: https://extension.illinois.edu/herbs.
